John McLaughlin - A Never-ending Quest
May 31, 2008
If you are a fan of Steely Dan, you’ll understand that one aspect of Walter Becker’s music is that he’s always been a perfectionist. In much the same way that a top author ensures there are no extraneous words; with Becker, no notes are ever wasted.
It has now been 14 years since Walter Becker - one half of Steely Dan - last offered us a solo studio recording - 11 Tracks of Whack.
It was back in 1994 that 11 Tracks of Whack, Becker’s debut solo outing, was released. It proved that the songwriter and musician had more to offer than he could through the medium of Steely Dan. And that is despite the idiosyncratic nature of the band’s music.
“When I write a song, it matters very much whether it’s intended for me,” Walter explains. “If it is, I can do what I want, within my own frame of reference. I take full responsibility.”
Yet, despite this, the 12 tracks that comprise Circus Money were a collaborative endeavor. During the three years of the album’s creation, he was working with Larry Klein, who produced and co-wrote all but one track.
“Writing songs with Walter Becker,” says Klein, “is like playing tennis with John McEnroe. It keeps you on your game.”
Also on top form were the musicians assembled for the recording sessions. Drummer Keith Carlock and guitarist Jon Herington, have both toured widely with Steely Dan, while keyboardists Ted Baker and Jim Beard were newcomers.
Walter is responsible for all the lead vocals as well as playing bass. “The bass gave me a more powerful position to define the direction I wanted the music to take…I became something of an expert on various sub genres (of Jamaican music), such as songs about motorcycles and/or featuring motorcycle sound effects; songs about the barbers versus the dreads, and songs about various judicial procedures.
It has been noted that the Jamaican influence started on 11 Tracks of Whack. Becker explains, “I had started listening to that (Jamaican music) way back in those days and at one point Donald (Fagen) and I actually experimented with the idea of doing an album with reggae-type beats on it in the Eighties…It’s always fascinated me the way they use the same elements of rhythm and blues playing, but they turn them around in a way and yet they still get a great feel on it, you know? And as a rhythm section guy, those rhythm sections are sort of the ultimate — the tightness of it, the complexity of the feels.”

Cell Phones At The Workplace
May 31, 2008
Most workplaces do not appreciate if you use your cell phone while you are supposed to be working. Many companies have implemented rules prohibiting cell phone use in work areas. If you are a person who cannot stand to be without your cell phone, there are some simple rules to ensure that your cell phone use does not interfere with your job, your supervisor, or your co-workers.
The first rule that you should follow if you are bringing your cell phone to work is to shut your ringer off. Leave the phone on vibrate if you must have it on. This will keep your cell phone ringtone from bothering the employees around you. It can also prevent your boss from knowing how many calls you get at the workplace.
When you do get a call at work, it may be prudent to let the call be picked up by voice mail. This prevents other workers from complaining to the boss about the calls that you are receiving. It also eliminates any temptation that you may have to begin a conversation that you really should not be having.
While at work, you should only answer important calls. These include calls from your child, calls from his school, and emergencies that must be taken care of immediately. Chatting with your sister or checking on a doctor’s appointment that you have next week are not emergencies.
When you need to make cell phone calls, you should find an isolated place to do it. In the break room during lunch when there are twenty other employees sitting around is not a private place. Having a conversation in front of your co-workers that they are not included in is rude. If you chose a place out in the work place during your break time, it may distract the people who are still working as they try to overhear your conversation.
You should never ever use your phone in the public restroom. If one of your co-workers is going to the bathroom and the person on the other end of your call can hear them that is an invasion of your coworkers’ privacy. You might also consider that many bathrooms in the work place are large and echo so that any co-worker who is present may be able to hear the entire conversation.
You should not bring your cell phone to any meetings. Your concentration should be on your job and your boss will notice if you are paying attention. Even if you have your cell phone set on vibrate, if it rings it can disrupt the entire meeting as well as gain you some unwelcomed attention by your supervisor. You should also never check your cell phone to identify who is calling. Your boss will think that you do not care about your job.
While some companies have stopped the use of cell phones during work hours, the businesses that allow them encourage their employees to only use them in case of emergency. Otherwise, you should only make calls on your own time, such as during breaks and lunchtime. This gesture is just a common courtesy that you can extend to your bosses and co-workers.

Childproofing Your Home
May 31, 2008
As your baby begins to crawl and explore his new home, you need to be aware of all the elements that exist in the normal home environment that can be hazardous to your child. Child-proofing your home before your baby can crawl is a good way to ensure that you have plenty of time to be thorough and recheck your home for anything you may have missed before your baby can find it.
One of the first purchases that you will need to make to childproof your home is safety locks and latches for your cabinets and drawers. These devices are easily installed and should be placed on any cabinet that contains medicines and cleaning supplies as well as other chemicals in your house that could pose a threat to your child. Locks should also be placed on drawers that contain knives and other sharp objects as well as “junk” drawers that may contain tools such as screws and screwdrivers. Once you put these latches and locks in place, you may want to place things in these cabinets that you normally leave out, such as containers for loose change and bathing items such as soap and toothpaste. To be on the safe side, you should go through your home and look at everything, locking up anything that could harm your child in any way.
Safety gates are another necessity as infants begin to crawl. These gates should be placed anywhere that you feel the child needs to be prevented from going. Many people use these to prevent a child’s access to kitchens and bathrooms. The “pressure” safety gates are ideal for these rooms. These gates expand to fit tightly in place, but can be moved with ease when not in use. More permanent gates that screw permanently into the wall are best when blocking stairs as these are sturdier than the “pressure” style. With either style, you should avoid the older V-shaped design as children have been known to get their heads stuck in the gaps.
Another safety feature that you may want to purchase is door locks and door knob covers. The door locks are more permanent than the child safety gates and you may want to place these on basement and attic doors, as well as on doors leading to a garage or a swimming pool. You should install these locks high enough that a small child cannot reach them even by standing on a chair. Door knob covers are temporary fixtures that fit right over the doorknob that denies children access to certain areas but enables adults to easily open the door. You may want to install these covers on front and back door knobs leading outside so that you can still open these exits quickly in case of a fire or other emergencies.
Outlet covers and plates are another item that is necessary to childproof your house, especially when your child begins to crawl. Most electrical outlets are eye-level to a baby on the floor, and the natural instinct for the child is to stick objects in the hole. Many outlet covers just plug right into the outlet to keep the empty holes out of sight. When purchasing these items, you should make sure that they are not easily removed by children and are large enough so a child cannot choke on them.
These products are just a few of many that you can purchase to childproof your home. By childproofing, you can ensure that your baby has the safest home environment possible.

Using Tarps In Harmony With The Environment
May 31, 2008
You may not think that a poly tarpaulin can help you with green living. However, these versatile items are excellent for a large number of environmentally sound uses. Recycling gets a lot of attention as a way to save the Earth, but people frequently forget that reducing our use of resources in the first place is a better method. By using tarps to protect your building, landscaping, and other materials from damage and degradation, you can assure yourself that you’ll use the minimum possible.Green and camouflage tarps also are suitable for blending into the environment and look more pleasant than looking at a vivid blue tarp.
When left out to the weather, metal rusts, materials like concrete react and solidify before they are supposed to, paint can be contaminated, and plastics degrade. To keep your materials safe, place them on pallets above the ground and be sure to cover them with the appropriate tarp. Choosing the right tarp for your use is an important part of protecting the environment. The wrong tarp might not cover your materials adequately, or may degrade before its purpose is served. Because of this, you should be certain to make the right choice the first time you purchase a tarp.
Originally, tarps were made of proofed canvas. This kind is still available, and is appropriate for some uses. However, canvas tarps are generally very heavy and awkward, as well as being expensive. A well-selected poly tarpaulins is a better choice for many uses. It’s possible to find polyethylene tarps made out of recycled materials. The item you use to protect your building materials may once have made up drink and food containers. Polyethylene accounts for the majority of plastics recycling. However, plastics cannot be recycled into items that contain edibles, because of contamination risk. This means that a lot of recycled plastics see a new life as stuffing for pillows and jackets, trash bags, and, of course, tarps.
You’re probably used to seeing the budget blue tarp sold at hardware stores. These are good for lightweight applications that don’t expose them to the sun as they are not so durable. They’re usually about 6 mils thick. If you’re looking for a heavy duty tarp to take some punishment, like a carport cover, try getting an 11 or 12 mil tarp, or even a super heavy duty grade one – 23 mils thick. Unfortunately, like lumber, the specified size of the tarp isn’t actually the size. Most of these items will be 4-6 inches smaller in every dimension. The size specified on the package is the size prior to hemming. Be sure to take this into account when buying your tarpaulin.
For specialized applications, you can find tarps made to do a variety of jobs and sold in many different colors. Corner reinforced tarps resist tearing, and UV treated ones are protected against the weakening that polyethylene often suffers because of sunlight exposure. Flame retardant tarps are available for use in areas subject to a lot of heat. If you want a tarp that will keep sunlight off of your materials, you can get specialty tarps that have an additional layer to reflect or block the sun’s rays. Silver sun blocking tarps reflect light away, keeping the items underneath cool in the summer. This means that covering your carport or temperature sensitive materials with this kind of tarp is an excellent idea.

The Role Of American Business In Education
May 31, 2008
If we accept the premise that education is a lifetime process then well structured, sustainable business-education partnerships become essential. The average American student attends school for 12 to 14 years. Most of these young people will enter a career in business or industry that will last 30 to 40 years. However, there is almost no communication between the education and business communities during the years of learning and training. The result is that most of the students exiting American schools are unprepared for successful employment.
Bridging this communication gap through business-education partnerships can lead to a successful experience for everyone involved. At an early age students will develop skills, learn to adjust to the demands of the workplace and become better future employees. Men or women in business will derive both personal and financial satisfaction by developing a close relationship with educators. The benefits of partnership are detailed in Facing the Future Together, a book that focuses directly on how-to construct a successful business-education partnership and the mutual benefits that result from this collaboration.
A business person reading this article might have some of the following questions and concerns:
Q. “How would I even begin to navigate the bureaucratic halls of education and get involved?”
A. Actually it’s not that difficult. Education works very much like business. Make your initial contact with a decision-maker. Consult Facing the Future Together if you need assistance in developing a plan of partnership. Schedule a meeting with a local school district superintendent. Explain your desire to establish a business-education partnership. After obtaining the superintendent’s support, select a school. Ask for an introduction to the school principal. Like business, when you have the support of the education CEO things will happen and you are well on your way to a successful partnership.
Q. “How much money is this going to cost me?”
A. A successful partnership is not about money. The real value of this partnership is the people-to-people relationships it engenders not in the amount of money that changes hands.
Q. I’m not a teacher. I run a business. So what can I offer as a partner for a school?
A. You have a great deal to offer and to gain from this partnership. You and your employees can act as mentors, tutors, career day speakers, demonstrate the latest technology in your business and show how it applies to math, science or English curriculum. You can host field-study trips for students, give them an opportunity to volunteer at your business site or create student internships. Activities like these can motivate and inspire students to perform at higher levels in school in preparation for entering a career.
Traditionally, it is the educator who makes the first move toward partnership. But as we have discussed, this need not be the case. Everyone wins when business-education partnerships are formed.
“Some see private enterprise as a predatory target to be shot, others as a cow to be milked, but few are those who see it as a sturdy horse pulling the wagon.”
-Winston Churchill
As described in the quote from Sir Winston, business in America is an influential and sturdy horse. For most Americans our economic and social well-being is tied closely to the experience of business. We feel more secure when consumer spending and the stock market show growth and unemployment figures are in decline. When business and education are harnessed together in partnership the delivery system for education becomes more efficient and relevant.
Facing the Future Together is written for the business person as well as the educator. Educators are often criticized for having little or no contact with the outside “real” world. Criticism of education by the business community, the media and politicians has often led educators to isolate themselves. But teachers, counselors and administrators should never work in isolation. Students will benefit far more from support derived from partnership with the business community than from criticism by those who may be their future employers.

Allen Payne Makes Comeback
May 31, 2008
When people think of Hollywood, the list can go on and on about whom their favorite actors are.
However, when people think of “Black Hollywood,” they can probably list their favorite black actors on one hand. Why is that?
So many talented Black actors today do not get nearly as much recognition as they deserve. They have perfected the art of the profession by proving that they can be versatile and can adapt to any genre.
Allen Payne has proven this repeatedly. The ladies love him for his charm and good looks and the brothers can relate to him because of his “keeping it real” attitude.
Don’t call it a comeback because the brother has been around for years. This veteran actor has mastered his craft and deserves all the accolades that come his way.
Some remember him from his early days of acting as the wisecracking Lance Rodman on the “Cosby Show” and “A Different World.” Others may remember him as the southern – love interest, Jason, to Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Lyric in the movie “Jason’s Lyrics.” His most memorable role that fans of all ages know him best as was Gee-Money in the 1991 hit movie “New Jack City” where he was the right-hand man to Nino Brown played by Wesley Snipes.
This talented brother stars every Wednesday night on TBS as C.J. Payne on Tyler Perry’s new hit sitcom “The House of Payne.” Allen Payne plays the lead role in this comedy where he is a loving husband and father whose world is turned upside down when his wife’s drug addiction causes the family to move in with his aunt and uncle.
Once his wife has been admitted into rehab, fatherhood takes on a completely new meaning for him. Fans can appreciate Payne’s latest role portraying a strong, Black male figure whose number one priority is taking care of his family. Since Hollywood has a way of portraying so many Black actors in a negative way, “The House of Payne” portrays a Black man in a way that has become obsolete in our society today.
Tyler Perry is definitely contributing to shining a positive light on Black males and fatherhood by using an entire Black cast.
When Payne was asked if he thought having an all-Black cast was important, his response was, “I think to show life as a reality is important. I don’t think any of us live in an all-anything world anymore. I think it’s important that art reflects life.”
Payne, 38, was born and raised in New York where he began acting. During his earlier years when most Black males are at a very influential stage, Allen began acting as one of the ways that helped keep him out of trouble.
Rumor has it that he turned down a chance for lucrative, steady work on television to pursue a career in features. Allen Payne has consistently chosen the right roles and has proven that he is definitely a force in Hollywood.
Payne says, “I’m going to do my part and just try to leave a legacy of a brother who worked hard, who understood who he was and spent a lot of time trying to help others reach that same point in their lives.”
Allen Payne’s Credits Include:
Cosby Show (1990-1992) television sitcom
New Jack City (1991) motion picture
CB4 (1993) motion picture
Jason’s Lyrics (1994) motion picture
Vampire In Brooklyn (1995) motion picture

The Link Between Teen Addiction And Teen Suicide
May 31, 2008
One of the greatest, but too often unspoken, dangers of teen drug use and addiction is the high risk of suicide that tends to accompany it. Teens who use drugs regularly are more likely to consider suicide as well as to act upon their thoughts. According to the American Psychiatric Association, many teens suffer from depression. In many cases, teens will often “self-medicate” with drugs in order to avoid exposing themselves and their problems to adults. The use of drugs does not alleviate the problems, but instead, usually aggravate them, leaving the teen with a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. This places them at greater risk for suicide attempts. Drug use and dependency clouds judgment, and lowers the teen’s natural survival instinct. Drug use affects the chemical balance of the brain, intensifying feelings of sadness, depression and loneliness. Periods of withdrawal from the drug, and intense feelings of crashing profoundly affect the young person’s mind and mood. While these factors exist in adult addicts, they are more intensified in the young adult and teen, particularly due to his dependency upon adults.
In addition, a frequent user of drugs already has the means at his disposal to act on suicidal thoughts. Overdosing is one of the easiest and most common methods of suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death amongst young people from the ages of fifteen to twenty-four. Some experts suggest that as many as ninety percent of those teens who commit suicide abuse drugs, though others estimate that the number is closer to between fifty- three and sixty percent. Teens, especially today, are under a tremendous amount of pressure. Caught in the crossroads between childhood and adulthood, teens are filled with conflicts about themselves, their identity, and their place in the world. These factors, coupled with their perception that the adult world doesn’t or can’t, understand their angst, leave them vulnerable and isolated. These factors contribute to both addiction and suicidal intention, both of which also feed on the other.
Methods for treating a teen with suicidal intentions are very similar to treating teens with addictions. Most of the root causes are quite similar. The most important thing for an adult to provide the teen, is an avenue of communication. It is important that the teen feel that he has someone to turn towards to express his feelings and problems. He or she need to feel that they are not isolated. There are people who care about them. They are not the only one who is struggling with these problems. If a teen does not believe this, then no other treatment can truly be effective. However, this is of course, only the first step. The teen needs to receive professional guidance and possibly medical treatment to deal with his addiction.
No matter the cause and solution, the connection between teen substance addiction and suicide is too strong to stand to the side. Of course there has always been preventative programs centering around education, but more active steps need to be planned. In truth the most successful stoppage of teen drug use, is showing the young person that true pleasure comes from hard work and not the quick fix of drug use. If this can be accomplished then the teen will over time turn from addictive substances lower his or her risk of suicide.

Protecting Your Loved Ones With Medical Alarms
May 31, 2008
Medical alarms, sometimes referred to as medical alert systems, are essentially tiny personal emergency medical devices that are monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The purpose of these miracle devices is to provide protection for seniors and those in ill health or a weakened state. If your loved one experiences a medical emergency, the monitoring system provided by medical alarms makes it possible to reach help immediately and easily.
A medical alert device is usually wireless and small - a modern-age medical alarm is small enough to be worn as a necklace, pendant, watch, on a key chain, or as a medical alert bracelet. Most of these devices, such as a medical alert necklace, are waterproof as well, ensuring the person wearing it won’t unintentionally cause damage.
Seniors enjoy a wide breadth of benefits from wearing a medical alarm. For one, medical alert devices allow seniors to live a fully independent life without sacrificing a sense of safety. Providing security and instant access to emergency services, a medical alarm can do wonders in improving the life of your aging loved ones.
These systems are easy to set up and use - all you need is a reliable phone line in the residence so that the alarm can contact the appropriate services if and when they are required. Seniors usually wear the device to ensure they have access to help at all times. Working through a wireless connection to the telephone line and emergency console, a medical alarm allows for the ultimate in flexibility, as the console can be installed anywhere within the home.
How does the system work? Simply put, a medical alarm system dives into action when the person wearing the device presses the emergency button in the event of a problem. This activates the medical alert system wirelessly and sends information to the console. At this point the system is instructed to either contact the company’s 24 hour response center, or it will automatically dial the list of emergency contacts you have stored on the alarm system. If no answer is received on the other end, system will continue to dial the emergency numbers, and resort to contacting 911 if necessary.
Most alert systems include certain basic features, including two-way communication between you and the emergency response center. Most medical alarm systems operate with the use of wireless technology so that communication can be established as quickly as possible.
Emergency auto dialers are another feature to seek out when shopping for medical alarm systems. Systems with this option allow you to program numbers into the alert system, including those of family, friends, doctors, neighbors, and anyone else you need.
A bio-monitoring alarm system is another excellent feature to consider. When a system has this feature, the device monitors heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and other bodily functions.
Medical pagers built into a systems are an added feature for day-to-day living that reminds seniors when to take their medication. When medical alarm systems are equipped with an extra feature such as this, you can rest assured knowing your loved one is truly protected. Systems installed with MedicAlert add even more protection, as a system with this feature can identify a patient and their known health problems. Medical alarm systems have come a long way over the years. And with medical alert devices making strides each year, you can be sure the devices of the future will be even more advanced.
A senior medical alarm is about more than just convenience - it is about freedom, independence, and peace of mind. These devices make it easier for your loved ones and yourself to feel secure. A medical alert device acts as a lifeline that could save someone you love in an emergency situation.

The Importance Of Basic Statistics
May 31, 2008
What is Basic Statistics?
Basic Statistics is a form of mathematics that allows you to properly collect, analyze, interpret and present data in an easy to understand format. It is a basic skill needed to ensure proper understanding of many of the more centralized statistic fields.
Importance of Statistics
We are bombarded with data in everyday life. These days, we encounter the use of statistics in everything ranging from news reports, sports averages, weather, elections, business reports, stocks to advertisements, economic conditions etc.
Importance of basic statistics in everyday life cannot be stressed enough. Inclusion of basic statistics in high school curriculum is uncommon but proves highly beneficial to supplement certain careers in future. This field may be the most widely used of all and most people don’t even know they are using it.
Many of today’s brightest business minds use this study to create charts and graph that allow them to stress a certain aspect of the business they are dealing with. Market research agencies, News rooms, marketing divisions of large corporations, NGOs, accounting firms etc. are full of people who specialize in basic statistics.
Who should take it?
Basically, anyone who is planning on entering the business, accounting, psychology or research based fields would benefit from the study of basic statistics. This also applies to anyone entering college to obtain an MBA or a specialized degree like social sciences, requiring higher study of statistical methods. Such students would be advised to complete this course at the high school level itself to be able to complete the requirements with ease.
Statistical Awareness with Triola Textbooks
Just turning on the television exposes us to surveys and percent this and percent that. How many dinners have been ruined with a survey taker calling? For some particular reason humans are fascinated with how many of us want to do this or that. We need to know not just about ourselves but also, in exact (+-) numbers, how many or what percent. Curiosity dictates it.
But is it really?
These statistics are supposed to mean something. Statistical textbooks like the Triola textbook series show how the numbers are arrived at, but what do they really mean? You have a mean and a statistical deviation derived through the Triola textbook equation but what does it mean to us?
The people need to know.
Enter the experts
These people supposedly understand what the Triola textbook equations and numbers mean. They can apply the numbers to show how people are behaving and give it weight in the decision making process. But wait, there is a problem. This expert says it means this and this one says it means that. How can this be? These are statistics! They govern everything and must be correct and accurate in the calculus.
Maybe yes and maybe no
Never mind the experts. Enter the data. Depending upon the data that is used the end result can mean just about anything you want it to mean. The data may seem to be the correct data to enter into the equations, and most likely is, but to what end? Ultimately, the numbers never lie. It is just a question of which numbers you care to use. The experts have to eat to after all.

Why Specialization In Language Translation Matters
May 31, 2008
The demands of today’s market require that competent professional translators specialize in specific fields of knowledge to render accurate translations. Just as it is not a good idea to hire a technical writer to write a legal contract, one would not use a technical translator to attempt a literary translation. Both activities have to do with translation, but they involve a completely different skill set.
Some of the fields of specializations for translators are:
Health Care Industry
Medical translation services are vital to providing quality care to foreign language speakers. Hospitals, emergency rooms, doctor’s offices, public health organizations and nurses’ stations utilize Spanish to English translators to help make the check-in process easier, as well as obtain accurate patient information for patient records. Medical translation services assist in the translation of medical records, consent forms, insurance claims and medical histories. Research labs also use language translators to assist in translation of clinical trials and research, as well as patents and licensing. Medical equipment manufacturers often require the use of Spanish translators to write manuals and instructions in the appropriate language for Spanish language users who will be using the equipment. Catalogs that contain descriptions of the equipment also require careful translations so that customers can read and understand.
Law
Law firms rely on accurate translations to help them with every aspect of their work with non-English speaking clients and countries. A good legal translation will take the English-based version of documents such as discovery papers, mergers and acquisitions materials, patents and trademarks, summons, immigration paperwork and wills, and translate them accurately into/from the foreign language. Many other people need certified translations to submit their paperwork for legal or immigration purposes.
Finance
Banks and insurance companies use translators to translate documents routinely for clients as well as to communicate with partners and associates in foreign countries. Financial institutions often require professional translators to work on business reports, research, minutes, agreements, financial statements, contracts, public offerings, policies and claims, proposals, and litigation, translating documents from English to foreign languages.
Business
The business community also needs the services of professional translators. Good translators are sought after by public relations departments for translating marketing documents, advertising and catalogs into foreign-language versions for their customers. Our clients also provide foreign language speaker with the documentation in their own language as investment information. Businesses also use interpreters who work on the telephone, translating customer messages into the appropriate language for the company. Other business applications include the translating of web pages. Because of the global reach of Internet websites, it makes sense to ensure that your web pages can be read by those who speak the target language.
The craft of the language translator is as specialized and demanding as in many fields of knowledge. Be aware that when you need to translate important documentation into/from a foreign language, you seek the services of a professional language translator who will be trained to offer a well written and accurate rendition of your original text. Don’t look for just a bilingual colleague; look for professional translators that are native speakers, trained as translators, experiences (more than 2 years) and with a high degree of specialization in their fields of knowledge.
